Miscellaneous Southern African Music Bibliography
(Annotated):

Broughton, Simon
1994 World Music: The Rough Guide. The Rough Guides.

A very general guide to non-western and/or folk music. While this definitely doesn't count as an academic source, I must admit that consulting it has been one of my methods of becoming familiar with the music of Southern Africa in general. There is a limit to how much it can offer, but the overview is still extremely useful to get situated in the material. It tends to focus on popular music, and some might criticize the 'World Music' approach, although it does mention the connections such popular music has to the more "traditional" music of the regions.
